How to measure for carpets
We would always recommend using our free measuring service but if you want to do it on your own, here are some helpful tips.
- Measuring with 2 people is often easier.
- Equipment that might help: tape measure, paper, pen and calculator.
- Start by measuring the length and width of your room at the longest and widest points. Remember to measure into all alcoves, cupboards and doorways (go to the middle of the doorway or you could find yourself 2/3cm out
- The standard units for length and width are in metres, and for the area are square metres.
- An excellent way to make sure you don’t miss any wall areas is to sketch out a diagram of your room. Include any doors, windows and recesses. Then take into account all these areas when measuring the room. Draw a simple diagram of your home .It doesn’t have to be perfect, but the measurements need to be accurate.
- Measure each individual area and write the measurement on your diagram. Using these measurements, break the room down into smaller rectangular shapes, calculate their area, and then add them together to figure out the total area of your room.
- Please remember carpets come in predetermined widths 4 metres / 5 metres. So you may find that your square metre need is more than you measured. If you are unsure please give us a call. Vinyl comes in 2m, 3m and 4m widths.
- Add 10cm on to the length and width of the carpet, allowing for waste.
- Measure twice! Check your calculations.
- If you are ordering carpet with stripes please be aware that the stripes run along the length of the roll and not the width.
- If you are ordering a patterned carpet please confirm the pattern repeat needed with your fitter to aid the fitting process. Or speak to our carpet specialists and fitters to do the hard work for you.
