Carpet vs. Vinyl
While each flooring option offers its own set of benefits, the comparison between vinyl vs. Carpet for the longest time has had mixed reviews. Ultimately it is up to you, your design, budget, purposed use and personal preference will all factor into your decision making. There is no right or wrong answer, below we aim to share some of the Pro’s and Con’s with you to help you decide.
Carpet
Pro
- Carpet is durable if you care for it properly
- Soft and comfortable under bare foot
- Warmer than Vinyl
- Carpet offers texture options that vinyl doesn’t
- Provides insulation, which can help keep your house warm and contribute to reducing heating bills
- Reduce noise due to soft material usually with a level of density
Con
- Some materials can stain easily, although nowadays there are lots of stain resistant options available.
- Carpet requires constant vacuuming to remove dust and dirt, which can quickly build up, especially in higher pile carpets.
- If moisture gets into a carpet and isn’t dealt with, it can even cause the carpet to go mouldy.
Vinyl
Pro
- Vinyl is a tough material that will last a long time, as long as you choose a good quality vinyl
- Resistant to water, unlike carpet
- Minimal maintenance, nothing more than a regular sweep and mop clean
- Vinyl can be used to imitate almost any other material, including wood, tile and stone
- Vinyl tends to be a better choice in hotter temperature areas
- Easy to install
Con
- If a vinyl floor gets damaged, you may have to replace the whole thing
- Some vinyl can fade through exposure to the sun, but luxury vinyl’s are available as UV resistant
- Vinyl flooring requires a perfectly flat floor to be installed
