Larry Speare’s is the biggest stockist of Carpets, Vinyl’s, mattresses and Beds in Plymouth. Larry stocks over 70 ranges of carpets in store and has access to hundreds of special order carpets that can arrive in just a few days. Rolls and rolls of vinyl in store , in every pattern, design , colour or effect you could need. Not to mention a warehouse full of ready to go carpet remnants in every shape, size and for every budget. All which can be delivered the same day or fitted the next. There are also 100’s of beds and mattresses in store for immediate collection or delivery. Offering an unrivalled service, our products cross a full spectrum of prices.
Larry Speare started his career selling carpets at the Co-op store in Plymouth, during the late 1950’s. After a brief period in the USA in the late 1950’s, he opened his first store selling quality carpets in Cornwall Street, Plymouth, around 1965.
Due to the incredible success of this venture, more small shops soon followed all across the South West during the 1970’s. Nowadays the company has consolidated and focussed its efforts on its one major store in Rendle Street Plymouth, with over 30,000 square feet of sales floor, a huge car park and a massive warehouse, with hundreds of items in stock, all ready for immediate delivery
Larry Speare has been an expert in carpets and beds and has continued to provide unrivalled customer service throughout the last 57 years and that firm commitment to customers still stands as prominent as ever today. Larry Speare’s Beds and Carpets, only employs professionals who are passionate about their work and who show that they work just as hard on our customers’ projects as they would on their own home.
Our employees have undergone professional training and have a vast number of years of experience between them. Technical knowledge, promptness, and diligence, along with a polite and engaging manner, all are very important to us, because we value every one of our customers.
1933 – Mr Speare Born one of 6 children
1950 – Started work for Co-op in Carpet Department
1951 – Joined the Marines just before his 18th Birthday served with 45 commando in Singapore and Borneo
1954 – Emigrated to America where he did store work in PX Canteens
1965 – Returned to The UK and opened first store on Cornwall Street, Plymouth
1966 – Opened another two stores on Mayflower Street, Plymouth
1970 – Opened another store on Embankment Road, Plymouth
1971 – Opened a further 17 stores in Torquay, Exeter, Newton Abbot
1972– Had opportunity to purchase land with a garage and flats in Rendle Street
1981 – Closed other stores and consolidated shops into one giant store 30000 sq feet
1982 – Current Store as you see it today built – 18000ft WW2 Air Raid shelter discovered here when works started.
2015 – Celebrated 50 years in business and won the lifetime achievement honour from The Herald
2019 – Along with the rest of the world had to close the store for COVID lockdown – staff tried their best to still help those who needed beds and mattresses urgently
2022 – Launched Online Website Shop for the first time
Present Day – 57 years in business and still going strong with his wife and two sons on board as directors and helping to manage the store.
