Do’s and Don’ts of Mattress Care (Turning your Mattress and Settlement)
Your mattress should provide you with years of comfort and good support. To keep your mattress in great condition, we recommend that you follow some Do’s and Don’ts.
DO turn the mattress regularly – we recommend in the first 3 months to do this every week and then after every month. This will allow the fillings to ‘settle’ evenly, resulting in a longer mattress life.
This means moving your mattress from the head of your bed to the foot – from top to bottom. The ‘settlement’ of the fillings in your new mattress is perfectly normal. Due to the number of fillings used in mattresses today, it is perfectly normal to see what some might call body impressions on the top of the mattress. Even with regular turning, evidence of body contours particularly hips and shoulders will be seen.
Most people tend to sleep in the same spot in bed, or if you are sharing your bed with another, the size and weight distribution may be different between you. Over time, if you don’t rotate your mattress, it can start to wear unevenly. By rotating the mattress regularly, you can get better support for longer, be comfortable consistently, fillings will distribute around the mattress evenly and you reduce the risk of any dipping or sagging over time.
Regardless of the type of mattress you have, you should always rotate your mattress from end-to-end at least every three months.
If your mattress is double-sided, you’ll need to flip it over when you rotate it too. But please check as you shouldn’t turn over a single-sided mattress. This is because the other side is not designed to be slept on.
Top tip for flipping over a heavy mattress:
- Don’t flip it over on your own! Always get someone to help you
- Use the mattress turning handles (yes that’s what these are for!)
You spend around a third of your life asleep, so it’s important to keep your mattress clean, hygienic and in good condition. It’s easy to forget to clean your mattress. However, cleaning your mattress regularly can help to reduce unwanted build-up of dust, dust mites, dead skin cells, mould and bacteria.
Air your mattress before putting the bed sheets back on. Opening the windows will improve ventilation and allows excess moisture to evaporate.
Wash your bedding every week. Choose a high heat setting to kill dust mites and germs.
DO use a mattress protector (we have some in store) to prevent accidental soiling and also keeps your guarantee valid.
DON’T use detergents or chemical cleaners as they have an adverse effect on the mattress cover and fillings. Always remember to refer to the manufacturer’s care instructions before cleaning your mattress, as different fabrics may require different methods of cleaning. Follow the manufactures guidelines to avoid permeant damage.
You can carefully vacuum your mattress and bed in small sections, paying particular attention to seams, corners and crevices where dust can build up. Take care not to damage the cover or dislodge the mattress fillings.
DON’T place your new mattress on an old base, as it may cause the new mattress irreparable damage and invalidate your guarantee.
