Larry Speare has become one of the most instantly recognisable figures in Plymouth’s business community. He founded the Plymouth based business Larry Speare Ltd. A bed and carpet company that is well known in Devon and Cornwall.
When he won The Herald’s Lifetime Achievement honour in 2015, he joked: “For those that don’t know me, my name is Larry Speare.” Then he added: “I sell carpets and beds. There is no delay, you can have them today.” Referring to his famous jingles and radio adverts.

Larry has been an entrepreneur since childhood. Born into poverty, one of six children and brought up in a tiny cottage in Plymouth, during the second world war, he was later conscripted to the Royal Marines before leaving and becoming an apprentice at a furniture shop, rising to assistant manager before deciding to go into business for himself.

He has been in business 56 years and at age 90 he thought it was about time to record some of his interesting life events and stories, into a book, so that you can learn a bit more about his life and the person behind the iconic name ‘Larry Speare’.

To date Larry Speare still comes into the shop a couple of times a week!
